- Advanced musical training — Preference for instructors with graduate-level education in piano performance or pedagogy from accredited institutions
- Performance experience — Active or past performance background that informs their teaching
- Pedagogical knowledge — Understanding of how students learn and ability to adapt to individual needs
- Examination expertise — Familiarity with RCM, ABRSM, AIM, and other examination systems
- Professional dedication — Commitment to ongoing professional development and excellence in teaching

Instructor Matching
During your initial consultation, we discuss your goals, schedule, and preferences to match you with an appropriate instructor. We consider factors such as the student's level, goals (exam preparation, competition, general study), scheduling needs, and learning style. Our goal is to create productive, long-term teacher-student relationships.

Alec Stevens
Piano Faculty & Online Education Director
Alec holds Honors degrees in Biochemistry and Music from the University of Utah. As a piano instructor, he blends technical proficiency with musicality, encouraging students to develop both skill and artistic expression. His teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive, structured environment where students can achieve their full potential.
Joanna Oshida
Piano Faculty
Joanna holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University. She brings extensive competition and performance experience, and her students have performed at Carnegie Hall, Libby Gardner Concert Hall, and The Noorda Center.
