Preparing for the Competitive Stage

Piano competitions offer motivated students valuable experiences: the challenge of preparing repertoire to the highest standard, the opportunity to perform for distinguished adjudicators, and the growth that comes from healthy competition with peers.

At The Music Academy, we provide focused preparation for students who wish to enter piano competitions at local, regional, and national levels. Our competition preparation program goes beyond regular instruction to address the unique demands of competitive performance.

Competitions We Prepare Students For

Our students have entered various competitions including (but not limited to):

  • Utah Music Teachers Association (UMTA) competitions and festivals
  • Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) state and regional competitions
  • Local piano festivals and competitions in Salt Lake Valley
  • National and international youth piano competitions
Note: Competition preparation is typically an enhancement to regular lessons, not a replacement. Students pursuing competitions generally need extended lesson times and more intensive practice schedules.

Is Competition Right for Your Student?

Piano competitions can be highly rewarding, but they're not for everyone. Competition preparation is most beneficial for students who:

  • Are self-motivated and enjoy challenging themselves
  • Can handle constructive criticism and feedback
  • Are willing to commit to intensive practice
  • View competitions as learning experiences, regardless of outcome
  • Have support from parents who maintain healthy perspective on results

We're happy to discuss whether competition preparation aligns with your student's goals during a consultation.
